US National Weather Service meteorologist Jody Aaron said the twister touched down in the south-western part of Birmingham at about 5pm and appeared to have caused “significant damage”.
Lieutenant Sean Edwards of Birmingham police said at least three people were taken to hospital for treatment of injuries.
Edwards said several houses were damaged, trees toppled and power knocked out in the area.
Alabama has been hit with storms and heavy rain since Wednesday. The weather service issued flash flood warnings around the region for Friday.
